What is the best thing one can do in order to up his style quotient in today’s day and age? It is obviously to go and get a tattoo. “Get a tattoo, get a life!” Whether its your love or your rebellious instinct, you can wear it all on your sleeve, (or anywhere else for that matter!), thanks to the art of tattooing. However, as colourful as the things might appear, there is indeed a word of caution. Alongwith tattoos, various issues of infection and the transmission of deadly diseases like AIDS creep in. Hence, it becomes important that both the parties involved, the tattoo artist and the one who wants to get it done, must know their Do’s and Do not’s and must adhere to them too. Let us now point out the potential trouble areas and what must be done in these areas so as to ensure “healthy tattooing”. The key areas are:
1.The place of tattooing / the ambience:
* The place for tattooing must be clean and must be registered witha local council, so as to ensure higher answerability.
*Cleanliness must be maintained.
* Proper arrangement for hand wash basins, with running hot and cold water, soaps, towels, etc. must be available.
* First – aid (in case something goes wrong) must be handy.
2. Personal hygiene of the tattooist:
* One thing the taatooist must accustom himself to is “regular hand washes”. He must wash his hands before and after the tattoo.
* A clean gown/ apron must be worn while tattooing.
*Any cut/ open wound must be covered with a water proof seal.
*Single use gloves must be used.
3. The equipment
* Sterlisation of equipment that pierces the skin is important as its absence can cause the transmission of infections, including HIV.
*Proper cleaning of equipment between each use.
* Use of single use disposableequipment must be encouraged.
* Tattoo machine must be covered with plastic covers as it allows for zero permeation of bacteria.
4. The procedures:
* A person below 18 years of age can be tattooed only under parental supervision. It is illegal to tattoo to the person otherwise and the tattoist can be penalised.
*The tattooist has to be thorough with his basics.
* All necessary equipment in terms of machinery as well as mechanism for disposal of waste and also for maintaining hygiene must be in place.
* Stencils should not be re-used.
* Antiseptics should be adequately used during the process.
4. The” after tattoo” care:
* Disposal of single use material at its prescribed place.
*The customer must be told about the various precautions etc. he has to take with the tattoo.
*The tattooist must not forget to wash his hands!
All said and and done, its only after one goes through the painful process of adhering to all the safety measures prescribed above, can one “happily tattoo” and make the others “happily tattooed”.
