For those who think past has never been a glamorous terrain, here is a befitting answer for them. In a recent excavation, a Siberian ‘tattooed’ mummy has been found in Russia. It proves that the passion for style and boldness can never be tied within time spans.
The mysterious mummy is of the Princess of Ukok who is being estimated to have died at an age of 24. Most likely known to be a member of the Pazyryk tribes, this tattoo was discovered way back in 1993. For the past 19 years this tattoo has been kept in the premises of the scientific institute of Novosibirisk. The most stunning aspect about this mummy is the tattoo which has been inscribed on it. What to talk of the common spectators even the most serious scientists are not able to help themselves adoring the aesthetic sense of this mummy! It might be a thing to envy for the modern tattoo artists but the tattooing skills of those tribal people is just phenomenal!
Explaining about the cultural aspect of these mummy tattoos, Dr. Natalia Polosmak, the lead researcher, opines that these are not just an aesthetic representation but also hold considerable cultural importance. These tribal communities believed tattoo to be a mode of identification, a medium of personal identification after death. Tattoos for them meant what passports means to us in the modern times. The people of the same family could easily find their family members after death by locating them with the help of tattoos. To a rational, scientific and logical mind of the modern times this may sound a bit exaggerated an explanation but the point lies in the essence of understanding the history of tattoo making and grasping its cultural significance.
